Turning Personal Challenges into Business Success
Matthieu Leclercq, son of Decathlon’s founder, used his personal challenges to create a business focused on facilitating generational transitions within family companies. In 2021, he launched For Talents, drawing from his experience of leading the global sporting goods giant and dealing with ongoing family conflicts. His father never truly stepped aside, and his siblings opposed his strategies.
Investing in Business Transition
With a fortune of one billion euros from selling his shares in Decathlon, Leclercq, a distant cousin of the Mulliez family, invests in companies like Petit Forestier, Paprec, and Altavia. « In France, 85% of mid-sized companies are not passed on to the next generation, and when they are, it’s often poorly managed, » he noted at the BIG salon by Bpifrance.
Addressing Succession Challenges
Leclercq co-authored a white paper with Transmission Lab, founded by Nadia Nardonnet, to help entrepreneurs understand the importance of choosing their successors wisely. Identifying obstacles, such as the Dutreil Pact, is crucial. This fiscal mechanism can delay power transfer and hinder younger generations from innovating within the company.
Real-Life Examples and Lessons
Leclercq cites examples like Pierre Bellon of Sodexo, Francis Holder of Paul bakeries, and Gérard Mulliez of Auchan, who held onto control for too long. « These founders were extraordinary, but when it comes to succession, they hand over Fisher Price keys and keep control for the wrong reasons, » he remarked, drawing from his own experiences.
